Annual ceremony for local heroes seeking nominations

The American Red Cross Capital Region Chapter is looking for a few heroes in Stanislaus County.

The organization is currently accepting nominations of individuals and groups that embody the Red Cross spirit and have performed some form of heroic deed here in Stanislaus County.

From the list of nominees the chapter will select a group of honorees to celebrate at the annual heroes breakfast. This year’s breakfast will be held at 7:15 a.m. June 3 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in downtown Modesto.

Candidates for nomination can be anyone who lives or works in the county who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to exhibit a true act of selflessness.

Nomination categories include: Animal Rescue, Good Samaritan (Adult), Good Samaritan (Senior), Good Samaritan (Youth), Law Enforcement, Medical Professional, Military (Active Duty), Military (Veteran), Professional Rescuer, Spirit of the Red Cross, Hero of the Year (one/event).

To nominate an individual or group for any of the Red Cross Heroes events, please complete the online nomination form at http://www.redcross.org/.

The deadline to nominate a Hero for recognition at this year's event is April 24.

Community members hope to rename baseball field after beloved Little League coach

A committee has been appointed to look into renaming the Little League baseball field on the campus of Julien Elementary after longtime coach Paul Cooper, who passed away on May 3 (Photo contributed).
A staple in the local Little League scene who recently passed away is the subject of a community effort to rename an iconic Turlock baseball field.
