TURLOCK — Fire crews responded to Turlock High School on Monday afternoon after smoke was reported inside the girls’ locker room connected to the west gym, officials said.
At approximately 1:58 p.m., Engine 31 and Squad 32 from the Turlock Fire Department were dispatched to a commercial fire alarm at the campus. Upon arrival, crews discovered heavy smoke and upgraded the call to a working commercial structure fire.
Firefighters located a small battery fire in a utility room and extinguished it quickly using dry chemical fire extinguishers, according to officials. The fire did not extend into the structure, and no injuries were reported.
Additional crews were sent through the Mutual Support Team resource-sharing program to assist with the incident and provide coverage for the city. Firefighters remained on scene for an extended period to ventilate the building and remove smoke.
The Stanislaus County Fire Investigation Unit determined the blaze originated in battery cells used for lighting.
