A kaleidoscope of color and movement filled the Main Stage Theatre at California State University, Stanislaus on Saturday during the Indian Student Association’s (ISA) Culture Show.
The first annual event featured 13 dance groups, along with Indian culture trivia and comedy skits. Giddha, Bhangra and Hindi dance troupes from across the Valley strutted their stuff to a capacity crowd at the campus theatre.
The crowd was not allowed to be passive audience members, however, as volunteers were called upon to mimic the moves of the dancers and to play the dhol, a double-sided barrel drum played using two wooden sticks.
“The event was to let others know about our culture and for our culture to come together to see the kids perform,” said Manpreet Dola, ISA president.
The event was also a fundraiser for the philanthropic organization, which donates to various community causes and also hosts a dance competition, coming up on March 26.
The ISA Dance Competition will be held at 6 p.m. on March 26 at Delta College in Stockton. Pre-sale tickets will be $20 and $25 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at the Delta College box office by calling 954-5110.
