Checkers restaurant coming to Turlock
Checkers
If approved, the Turlock Checker location would only be the second in the state of California, joining the one in Bakersfield pictured above (Photo contributed).

A proposal to build a new Checkers fast-food restaurant was submitted to the City of Turlock Planning Department earlier this month. The submitted paperwork outlines a proposal for the national chain to break ground at 2500 Fulkerth Rd.

Those familiar with the area may have already noticed an abundance of construction over the past few months. Currently, there is a Valero gas station being built in the same lot as the proposed Checkers location. Additionally, the recently opened Texas Roadhouse is located almost directly across the street.

Checkers is a parent-chain of the Rally’s franchise. The two restaurants share identical menus as they have the exact same food and product distributor. The menus consist mostly of burgers and fries.

Most Checkers and Rally’s locations tend to be tailored to commuters as they focus on drive-thru services, and the potential Turlock location would be no different. According to the proposal, the Turlock Checkers would take up 1,002 square feet with a drive-thru and 12 outdoor patio seating spaces.

If approved, the goal is to have the restaurant built and ready to operate by June 2023. The stated hours of operation are Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. and Sunday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to midnight. They would also hope to employ 35 individuals.

The Checkers and Rally’s websites show that there are a total of 867 locations currently in operation across the United States. California is home to 41 Rally’s locations, but only one Checkers. If approved by the City, the Turlock location would join the Bakersfield location as the only Checkers restaurants in the entire state.

F & M Restaurants LLC., hopes to break ground by Jan 1.

Remembering a ‘fierce defender of freedom’
Memorial Day 1
During a Memorial Day ceremony held on Monday at Turlock Memorial Park, Marsha Gonsalves, with the support of her husband Larry, shares memories of their son, Sgt. 1st Class Chad Gonsalves, who died on Feb. 13, 2006, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee north of Deh Rawod in central Afghanistan (KRISTINA HACKER/The Journal).
Every Memorial Day, locals put on their red, white and blue attire, maybe don a red poppy in remembrance of the fallen, and make their way to Turlock Memorial Park cemetery.
