The end of the holiday season brought about a slight increase in unemployment in January, according to the latest numbers from the Employment Development Department.
The unemployment rate in Stanislaus County for January was at 7.1 percent, up from a revised rate of 6.1 percent in December, but below the year-ago estimate of 10.1 percent.
The Trade, Transportation and Utilities sector, which includes retail, reported an estimated drop of 1,100 jobs in January, which along with a drop in the Farming sector, was the largest decline among all industries in the county, according to the EDD data. The Farming sector also posted a decline of about 1,100 for the month.
Every sector in Stanislaus County reported job declines in January except two. Leisure and Hospitality was flat for the month and the Government sector added an estimated 300 jobs, the EDD reported.
Mining, Logging, and Construction dropped by 400; Manufacturing by 300; Financial Activities by 100; Professional and Business Services by 100; Educational and Health Services by 700; and Other Services by 200.
Stanislaus County had an estimated labor force of 239,100 individuals in January, with approximately 222,100 employed and 17,000 unemployed, according to the EDD.
For January, California had an unemployment rate of 5.5 percent and the nation's was at 4.4 percent.
The EDD released data regarding the online job vacancies and the companies looking to hire for the month of January. The top 10 positions with the most job ads for the month in Stanislaus County were: Registered nurses - 513, which was down by 139 from the month prior; retail salespersons - 259, which was down by 85 from December; heavy and tractor-trailer drivers - 226, which was a decrease of 120 from the previous month; first-line supervisors of retail sales workers - 222, which was a decrease of 81 from December; sales representatives wholesale and manufacturing except scientific and technical products - 221, which rose by seven from December; customer service representatives - 187, which was down by 34 from the month prior; managers - 152, which dropped by 37 for the month; medical and health services managers - 138, down by 22 from December; maintenance and repair workers - 126, which was a decrease of 21 from December; and laborer and freight, stock and material movers - 112, which dropped by 58 for the month.
The top 10 companies posting the most online job vacancies in Stanislaus County in January were: Anthem Blue Cross - 430, down by 38; California State University, Stanislaus - 225, down by 10; Tenet Health System - 181, down by 30; Yosemite Community College District — 149, down by 122; Sutter Health - 146, down by 43; E & J Gallo Winery — 95, down by eight; Baptist Health - 78, up by 29; Kaiser Permanente — 76, down by nine; Starbucks Coffee Company - 73, up by three; and Gallo Glass Company - 73, down by 35.
