The Stanislaus County Fair, which traditionally begins the last weekend of July, might be moved to a later date next year. The 38th District Agricultural Association Board of Directors, who make all decisions regarding the Stanislaus County Fair, discussed changing the date of the fair at their meeting on Monday.
The Fair Board is faced with the decision to move the date of the 2010 Stanislaus County fair in response to the possible change of date for the 2010 California State Fair. The State Fair is tentatively scheduled to begin in the middle of July and run through Aug. 1, 2010, conflicting with the traditional run dates of the Stanislaus County Fair. Butler Amusements, who supply carnival rides for both fairs, has requested that the Stanislaus County Fair change their dates to Aug. 6, 2010, through Aug. 15, 2010.
Outgoing board president Ray Souza said that the Stanislaus County Fair is often staffed by teachers or school district employees, and a later fair date would conflict with the beginning of the school year. The board decided to send Butler a formal letter asking about their availability during the traditional Stanislaus County Fair dates. The fair is not contracted with Butler for the 2010 County Fair, and they can choose to go with a different carnival ride company.
Jack Wilkey, incoming board vice-president, brought up the 4-H and FFA exhibitors in the Stanislaus County Fair. Many livestock and other exhibitors spend every day of the Fair’s 10-day run at the fairgrounds with their animals. A later fair date would conflict with the beginning of their school year.
“That whole group is school-oriented,” Wilkey said.
The board will vote on the dates for the 2010 Stanislaus County Fair at their October meeting. Souza said that the dates for the 2010 California State Fair should be finalized by that time, and the board will be better able to make a decision.
The Merced County Fair, traditionally held in July, is moving one month earlier to the third week in June. The Merced County Fair considers the change necessary because of the expected move of the dates of the California State Fair.
“Our carnival rides contractor, Butler Amusements, many of our food concessions and several of our commercial exhibitors have commitments with the State Fair,” said Tom Musser, the Merced County Fair CEO.
