Ethie Weaver Radanovich, the wife of Congressman George Radanovich (R-Mariposa) died Thursday evening at age 50 after a three-year battle with ovarian cancer.
“Ethie truly lived life to the fullest — always thinking of (11-year-old son) King and me and those she loved,” George Radanovich said. “Last night surrounded by our family and friends she passed peacefully to be with God. Her tenacity and perseverance throughout her battle with cancer was evidence of her love of life and a commitment to the ideals she believed in.”
Ethie Radanovich, who had been in hospice care in the family’s Northern Virginia home for the past several weeks, slipped into a coma on Wednesday before succumbing around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday evening. A former political consultant, Ethie married George Radanovich in 1996.
George Radanovich has held the 19th Congressional District seat since 1995, but announced in December that he would not seek reelection due to his wife’s poor health.
In his absence, the crowded race for a seat on the November ballot now features State Senator Jeff Denham (R-Merced), Fresno Mayor Jim Patterson, former Congressman Richard Pombo of Tracy, and Fresno City Council President Larry Westerlund in the Republican primary. Mariposa County Planning Commissioner Les Marsden and Madera physician Dr. Loraine Goodwin will vie for the Democratic nomination.
Politics, however, were the last thing on George Radanovich’s mind on Friday, as he thanked supporters for help throughout his wife’s ordeal.
“King and I so appreciate all the kind words and prayers from everyone — they kept our spirits buoyed throughout,” George Radanovich said. “She was a most wonderful wife and mom — we’ll miss her every day.”
Memorial services for Ethie Radanovich will be held in Mariposa and Alexandria, Va.
