Events aim to foster community relationships

Creating a forum for community conversation is the goal of three local organizations.
Vision y Compromiso, CSU Stanislaus Office of Service Learning and the Turlock Community Collaborative are sponsoring two public forums on Jan. 19 and Jan. 21 in an effort to build relationships within the Turlock community.
“We just want to bring people together and be in conversation,” said event organizer Hugo Ramirez.
According to Ramirez, there is no agenda for the meetings. Event organizers just hope to create an environment where community members can come together and talk about the issues that concern them most, whether it be housing, health care, education, financial literacy or food supply.
The first meeting will be held in English from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Jan. 19. The second meeting will be held in Spanish from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Jan. 21. Both meetings will take place at Osborn Elementary School, 201 N. Soderquist Rd., in Turlock.
Ramirez said that although the forums are for the entire community, organizers are hoping to specifically reach out to the Spanish-speaking residents of Turlock.
“Sometimes there’s a disconnect between the Spanish-speaking community and city organizations,” said Ramirez.
The forums are made possible through a grant from the Chancellor’s Office of the California State University system.
