FOR THE FANS
academica fan night

After defeating Contra Costa FC 2-0 last weekend, Turlock’s semi-professional soccer team Academic SC is tied for first place in the National Premier Soccer League’s Golden Gate Conference with a 4-1 record. The team will fight for sole possession of first place against fellow GGC competitors El Farolito, who are also 4-1, during their home game on Saturday. Academic SC hopes to see the community rally in the stands during the match, which is also Fan Appreciation Night where the first 25 fans will receive free Black & Gold merchandise and everyone can enjoy $2 drinks. Fan Appreciation night — and the battle for first place — will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday at Academica Field, 1343 W. Greenway Ave. in Turlock.

Remembering a ‘fierce defender of freedom’
Memorial Day 1
During a Memorial Day ceremony held on Monday at Turlock Memorial Park, Marsha Gonsalves, with the support of her husband Larry, shares memories of their son, Sgt. 1st Class Chad Gonsalves, who died on Feb. 13, 2006, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee north of Deh Rawod in central Afghanistan (KRISTINA HACKER/The Journal).
Every Memorial Day, locals put on their red, white and blue attire, maybe don a red poppy in remembrance of the fallen, and make their way to Turlock Memorial Park cemetery.
