A long-burning fire destroyed a tire shop in Delhi on Thursday evening, according to Cal Fire Merced County.

The fire was reported around 7 p.m. Thursday at Ayala's Tire and Muffler shop in the 9700 block of Stephens Street.

The first firefighters from Cal Fire Merced County to arrive at the scene found the building and two vehicles fully engulfed in the flames. The fire also was causing a low-hanging, thick smoke that prompted officials to issue a shelter in place order for some neighborhoods near the blaze.

Cal Fire Merced County responded to the fire with a total of 40 firefighters. The Turlock Fire Department provided mutual aid by responding to the blaze with Squad 32, Truck 31 and a battalion chief.

The aggressive response from the fire fighters kept the flames from spreading to neighboring businesses, including a gas station.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
