Firefighters honored for service, professionalism
Firefighter of the year
Engineer Nick Grillo was named as the 2020 Firefighter of the Year.

A dedication to community service and fellow firefighters was recognized by the Turlock Fire Department at their annual awards ceremony.

The fire department took the opportunity to honor those individuals whose service has gone beyond expectations over the previous year.

Capt. Tony Nascimento was presented with the Chief's Commendation for his display of professionalism and application of skills under extreme and unique circumstances.

Engineer Mike Mungaray was given the Chief' s Commendation for his work as one of the department’s lead cadre in the recruit academy and his commitment to updating the department standard operating guidelines.

Grillo and Engineer Eric Boyd were the firs- ever recipients of the Turlock Fire Department’s Purple Heart. Both men were inside of an ambulance giving patient support when the ambulance was struck by another vehicle. Even through the collision and being injured themselves, the two men still provided patient care under extreme conditions.

“The firefighters recognized at the awards ceremony have demonstrated extraordinary commitment, dedication and courage throughout the year," said Interim Fire Chief Gary Carlson. "Each and every one of them has gone far and above what I as their Chief could possibly ask. The City of Turlock is fortunate to have such a professional and caring local fire department.”
