Firefighters look to fill boots for local charities

Turlock City firefighters will be pounding the streets on Saturday, boots in hand, in search of donations for four local charities.

Every spring, Turlock City Firefighters Local Union 2434 members hold a “Fill the Boot” fundraising campaign. Instead of raising money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association as they have in previous years, however, they will be giving their donations to Turlock charities.

“We wanted to reach out to our local community here in Turlock and make it a better place,” said Turlock City Fire Engineer Matthew Mason.

Firefighters will be raising funds for Turlock Together, the City of Turlock Recreation Department, Turlock Unified School District and Random Acts of Kindness.

The Turlock City firefighters adopted the Random Acts of Kindness program from the Oakland Firefighters. The firefighters created a Random Acts of Kindness committee who will disburse funds to individuals, families or organizations in the community who need it.

“When we’re on an emergency call and notice that someone is needing bedding or something else, we will take that need to the Random Acts of Kindness committee,” Mason said.

Turlock firefighters will be on the corner of Monte Vista Avenue and Countryside Drive from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
