A car wash and a bake sale to raise funds for the family who lost two members in a drowning off a San Francisco beach are set for today and Saturday.

Jose Garcia Sr., 47, of Turlock and his son, Jose Garcia Jr., 24, of Merced, were swimming in the waters off Ocean Beach, across from the Great Highway Sept. 24, when they were both swept out by the strong current. Both father and son were dragged under by the waves. Both men were pulled from the water, but the father was pronounced dead that day and the son died the following day.

Lorenzo Gonzales, the son and brother of the two men, said this was his brother's first trip to the beach since he was five years old. He said his brother and dad were "inseparable" and "truly the best of friends."

"There was never a dull moment and they always made each other laugh," said Gonzales.

The fundraisers are being held to help cover the funeral expenses and the future education of Jose Garcia Jr.’s daughter. The family also has set up a Go Fund Me account at http://www.gofundme.com/garcia2.

The bake sale is from noon to 6 p.m. today at Grays Upscale Resale at 8177 Lander Avenue.

The car wash is set to start at 10 a.m. Saturday at the parking lot next to the Wendy’s at 2395 Geer Road.

Jose Garcia Sr. is survived by his wife, Genie; daughter, Tiffany; and sons, Rodney, Lorenzo, Jesse and Ramon.

Jose Garcia Jr. is survived by one daughter.

A viewing will be held Oct. 6 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a funeral held Oct. 7 at Turlock Funeral Home.
