History of business: Dönerland has only been open about a month, but married owners Sadia Yaqub and Sohail Boot’s dream of restaurant ownership traces back years – and spans the globe.

Boot lived in Germany for 30 years, where döner kebab restaurants are all the rage. The gyro-like concoction of Turkish origins quickly won over Yaqub as well.

“I used to think that when I came back here I’d open a döner restaurant,” Yaqub said.

Yaqub returned to America and received her Master’s in Business Administration from California State University, Stanislaus. When Boot emigrated about a year ago, the couple decided to pursue their longtime dream.

Business specialty: As expected, Dönerland specializes in its namesake, the döner. Carved from a spit of vertically rotating lamb and beef, then wrapped in flatbread baked fresh in the on-site clay oven, the inexpensive döner sandwich is a staple around the globe.

“101 percent, everyone loves it,” Yaqub said.

Dönerland also offers a range of fresh Pakistani/Indian entrees, tandoori barbecue delights, and even a few Italian dishes.
