Turlock is mourning the loss of one of its trailblazers in the downtown culinary scene. LeRoy Walker posted on social media sites that business partner and friend Jennifer Doerksen died on Saturday.

“On Saturday, August 30, our industry lost a true icon, and I lost one of my greatest friends. For more than 25 years, she and I built not only a business but a bond rooted in laughter, food, and friendship. Together, we created memories that went far beyond the kitchen — moments that shaped who I am today. She will forever be remembered not only for her contributions to the restaurant world but for her kindness, generosity, and unwavering friendship,” Walker posted on Instagram.

Doerksen started as a home chef with a passion for good food and that led to the creation of Main Street eatery Bistro 234 in 2001. Shortly after its opening, Walker came on board as executive chef and then became business partners with Doerksen.

Doerksen and Walker quickly established themselves as culinary powerhouses in Turlock’s downtown restaurant scene and influenced other Main Street eateries through its use of local ingredients and an approachable style of fine dining.

Doerksen and Walker spun their success into a second downtown eatery, First & Main, in 2019. The popular restaurant’s menu features  dishes with Indian, Korean, Japanese and Vietnamese influences.

Dozens of people posted fond memories of Doerksen on Bistro 234’s Instagram page.

“I’m so sorry and sad that hear this. She was the back bone to this incredible and thriving industry. She literally set the original standards for the restaurant industry in Turlock. Nothing will be the same without her. Prayers and condolences to her family and loved ones,” posted klulustew.
