If a helping hand is nice, multiple sets of them certainly can get some work done fast. At least that’s what the staff of the Turlock Pregnancy Center learned after the center’s reception area was recently renovated as part of a project undertaken by the 11 graduating members of the Leadership Turlock Class of 2011.

The project serves as the culmination of a 10-month program designed by the Turlock Chamber of Commerce to motivate Turlock-area citizens to achieve higher levels of leadership and responsibility.

In addition to repainting and refurnishing a reception area that had previously evoked a clinical, doctor’s office-like mood, the now modernized center also received reception area accessories, such as a lamp and an olive tree. An upgraded copier was also donated to help TPC staff with their clerical needs. Plans are also in the works to design a new logo for the center and update its website.

After isolating several needs within the community as part of the Leadership Turlock 2011 program, the class began discussing TPC’s needs with Gena Larson, the center’s executive director, back in March. Conversations quickly turned to ways that Larson and her staff could present a warmer, more inviting environment for the women and families in crisis who enter TPC’s doors.

With the help of several corporate donations and the contributions of class members, a more vibrant Turlock Pregnancy Center was unveiled Monday, complete with eight new leather chairs and three classic wood tables. Significant corporate donations came via JKB Energy, Lancaster Painting and Winton-Ireland, Strom & Green Insurance Agency.

Leadership Turlock class members attended monthly seminars to learn more about the various businesses and non-profit organizations that comprise Turlock’s growing community. Each year, a new Leadership Turlock class identifies a community need and embarks on an enhancement project. The class is annually comprised of 15 to 20 business leaders who work, live or have a vested interest in Turlock.
