For Turlocker Jake Sroufe, 12, the Special Olympics have been instrumental in his life. Jake’s mother, Shawnda, said his participation in the athletics program has helped develop his social skills and his physical fitness level.
Next Saturday Jake will be one of dozens of participants in the 38th Annual Stanislaus Special Olympics’ Area Games Ceremonies with track and field events.
Jake plans to participate in track events. This is his fourth year in the games.
“He just loves it; he plays soccer, softball basketball and bowling. He just loves to be active with other kids, he’s made a lot of friends through Special Olympics,” said Shawnda.
Local dignitaries and special guests will join athletes in the opening ceremonies. There will also be bowling events at Yosemite Lanes at 1 p.m. on May 1.
The Olympics will be held beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Ken Daniel/ Special Olympics Sports Field, 1336 Stonum Rd., in Modesto and admission is free. Volunteer sign in is at 9 a.m.
