History of Business:

Local ladies looking to learn self-defense techniques need look no further than Liberty Private Security, a family-owned company that is expanding to include self-defense courses.

“The average woman has a very limited scope of what to do if she encounters an attacker,” explained Liberty Private Security President Ashley Cahill. “I wanted to begin a workshop here so I can teach women really effective, easy moves that they can memorize and apply. My goal is to teach these classes to anyone ages nine to 90 in a non-intimidating environment.”

Cahill is earning her self-defense certification through Empower Training Systems and is sharing her knowledge with the community through the workshop which will also feature Damsel in Defense, a company that offers products unique to female protection.

“I’ve grown up in this law enforcement family where my dad has always engrained in my sister and me how to stay safe. I kind of always thought this was common knowledge and I’m finding more and more it’s really not,” said Cahill.

The majority of security officers who work at Liberty are interested in entering law enforcement said Cahill, noting that her father has a passion for educating the next generation. Thus, Liberty has begun courses that include defense tactics, pepper spray and firearms instruction specifically for the officers. There are also classes available for the general public that include first aid and CPR training.

Cahill’s father Larry founded Liberty Private Security in 2005 after a career with the Modesto, Newman and California State University, Stanislaus Police Departments. Liberty provides security services for not only weddings and events, but also clients like the Carnegie Arts Center and Pageo Lavender Farms.

"We can add extra layer of protection for them,” explained Cahill.

While Liberty Private Security does serve the entire Central Valley, clients are mainly focused in the Turlock, Hilmar and Modesto areas. In recent years the company has also begun working with companies in the agriculture industry that have sought out extra protection from theft that can take place outside hours of operation.

Cahill’s female self defense workshop will take place 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Liberty Private Security.
