Man struck by train identified

The man struck and killed by a train Nov. 18 has been identified as a Turlock resident.

The deceased was identified as 56-year-old John Sweeten, according to the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office.

Around 11 a.m. Nov. 18, the train engineer on the Union Pacific freight line called 911 and reported striking an unknown object. It happened in the area of N. First Street and Julian Street.

Once officers arrived, they found the man, who had been struck by the train, said Turlock Police spokesperson Officer Steve Rodrigues. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The train came to a stop and blocked several intersections through town, from First Street down to Fulkerth Road and Golden State Boulevard. The road was reopened a few hours later.
