May library events offer crafts, summer reading program kick-off

Star Wars, superheroes and butterflies will all make an appearance at local branches of the Stanislaus County Library in May.

Turlock

The Turlock Library will host a number of free programs for all ages this month, beginning with the monthly meeting of the Turlock Library Book Club.  The book club will meet at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday to discuss "Shanghai Girls" by Lisa See. A limited number of copies are available for checkout at the library. Contact the Turlock Library Reference Desk at 664-8100 for more information.

Children can enjoy a special unicorn themed story and craft at 4 p.m.  May 12. Guest instructor Dianna Dulaney will lead a free program for teens and adults on the art of arm knitting at 7 p.m. May 12. Teens and adults will learn how to knit using hands and arms rather than knitting needles.

In recognition of Mental Health Month, presenters from Stanislaus County’s National Alliance on Mental Illness will host a program entitled “In Our Own Voice” at 1 p.m. May 16. This program will address what it is like to live with mental illness and how individuals can maintain their mental health. Each presenter will discuss his or her struggle with mental illness and the road to recovery.

Children and teens can take part in a colorful craft at 4 p.m. May 19. Participants will make colorful tie-dyed butterflies while learning about butterfly transformations. This craft is sponsored by the Friends of the Turlock Library.

As Seen on Pinterest, a craft program for teens and adults, will be held at 7 p.m. May 20.  Participants will learn how to make greeting cards for special occasions. The program is recommended for ages 14 and older. Registration for this program is required; please call the Turlock Library at 664-8100 to register. As Seen on Pinterest is sponsored by the Friends of the Turlock Library.

Children and teens are invited to the Superhero Summer Reading Challenge party from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. May 23. Participants can test their skills in a Superhero Training Camp and make miniature superheroes that they may take home. Refreshments will be served. The Summer Reading Challenge party is sponsored by the Friends of the Turlock Library.

All ages may build LEGO displays for the library at 4 p.m. May 26. LEGO play helps children learn basic mathematic and engineering skills in a fun, hands-on environment. Children under the age of 4 are welcome to participate, however, they must have direct parental supervision. LEGO programs are sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Denair

The Denair Library will offer free craft programs for all ages this month, beginning with a children’s craft at 3 p.m. Tuesday. Crafters will use tissue paper to make colorful piñata sun catchers.

Tweens, teens and adults can enjoy making glittered greeting cards at the library from 2 to 4 p.m. May 7. These cards can be personalized for all occasions.

The library will offer a number of superhero themed programs, beginning with the “Create Your Own Superhero” program at 3 p.m. May 20. Children are invited to create paper superheroes. This craft is sponsored by the Friends of the Denair Library. Children can create superhero and villain puppets out of paper bags at 3 p.m. May 27.

Keyes

Celebrate all things "Star Wars" at the Keyes Library  at 3 p.m. Monday. Children can play a find and seek game to receive a "Star Wars" pin, make "Star Wars" finger puppets and taste Yoda soda. Participants can come in costume, however, costumes are not required. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Keyes Library.
