History of Business:

Turlock resident Mariah Williams is already a business owner at just 22 years old, following in her mother’s footsteps. As the daughter of a salon owner, Williams grew up around the industry and has now used her knowledge to open a beauty studio in her own right in the heart of downtown Turlock. Though Flawless Studio of Beauty is Williams’ first business endeavor, her experience working alongside her mother has given her the confidence to chase her dreams.

“I don’t want to owe it all to my mom, but if I didn’t have her as a leader or as an example I would not feel comfortable owning a business,” said Williams. “I’ve seen the ins and outs of the salon industry. I’ve been in the industry for five years now and I thought it would be cool to open my own salon.”

The word salon, however, wasn’t quite the right fit for Williams’ new Main Street location, she said. Studio suits the business much better, encompassing all types of services that the business provides, from haircuts, colors and styling to skin care such as facials, waxing and microdermabrasion treatments.

“We’re tailored to hair, skin and makeup – not just hair, and maybe nails, like most salons,” said Williams.

It has been a hectic couple of months for Williams, who received the keys to her new beauty studio’s site in March and has worked tirelessly since then to ready the space for its grand opening, which took place Thursday night. So far, both the Turlock community and her fellow downtown businesses have been nothing but supportive.

“The support I’ve gotten from everyone is amazing, not just from local businesses but from the community as well,” said Williams. “When people support small businesses, they support families and help build their dreams.”

With countless salons, spas and beauty studios throughout the Turlock area, it wouldn’t be surprising if Williams viewed other businesses similar to her as competition. That’s not the case, she said.

“Everybody wants to be on top, but we don’t feel competition with anybody,” said Williams. “We’re comfortable working alongside one another; we’re like a big team and help each other out.”

Along with Williams, Flawless Studio of Beauty is home to four other stylists who all have a dedication to making clients look and feel their best.

“We’re small, but we want to make it a great experience for our clients, and that’s our focus,” said Williams. “We’ve all been in the industry for a long time and we focus on being a positive atmosphere. People come in here and say, ‘I like the vibe.’”
