New Starbucks proposed in northwest Turlock
new Starbucks
A new Starbucks location is being proposed to be built in the empty lot on North Tegner Road near Costco (CHRISTOPHER CORREA/The Journal).

An application has been submitted to the City of Turlock proposing that a new Starbucks location be built on the northwest side of town. The application, which was submitted in August, outlines a plan for the coffee powerhouse to construct a new location at 3085 N. Tegner Rd., in the empty lot by Wendy’s within the Monte Vista West Shopping Center next to Costco.

According to the application, the developer is proposing that the new Starbucks take up 1,226 square feet of space. The location would be a drive-through and walk-up only, with an outdoor patio space for customers to sit down at.

To accommodate for potential influxes of customers and to ease potential traffic in the commercial shopping center, the Starbucks would have a double drive-through lane designed to fit up to 14 vehicles. Twenty-four parking spaces would also be added, with restaurant accessibility being through the shopping center’s existing driveways. In addition to the building and the surrounding parking, new landscaping would be implemented and upgrades would be made to the center’s existing Dumpster enclosure.

According to the City, the project is categorically exempt from the provisions of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) Section §15332 [In-fill Development Projects]. This exemption is typically intended to promote infill development within urbanized areas.

If the application is approved, the North Tegner location would be the 10th Starbucks in Turlock.

Remembering a ‘fierce defender of freedom’
Memorial Day 1
During a Memorial Day ceremony held on Monday at Turlock Memorial Park, Marsha Gonsalves, with the support of her husband Larry, shares memories of their son, Sgt. 1st Class Chad Gonsalves, who died on Feb. 13, 2006, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee north of Deh Rawod in central Afghanistan (KRISTINA HACKER/The Journal).
Every Memorial Day, locals put on their red, white and blue attire, maybe don a red poppy in remembrance of the fallen, and make their way to Turlock Memorial Park cemetery.
