‘No Kings’ rally returns to Turlock

Turlock’s second “No Kings” rally — one of hundreds scheduled across the nation — is set for Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Monte Vista Crossings shopping center, located on the southeast corner of Countryside Drive and W. Monte Vista Avenue.

The event — co-organized by the Turlock Democratic Club and Be the Change Turlock — is expected to be one of 2,500 such events across the country, and is focused on the policies of President Donald Trump.

“We want to make sure that people remember what we’re fighting for,” said Be the Change coordinator Cathy Doo. “And that is against Donald Trump’s administration and his most recent moves to put U.S. soldiers into American cities.”

In preparation for the June 14 No Kings Day, Turlock Democratic Club president Daniel Miller anticipated 60 to 70 protesters and hoped for 100. Estimates put the crowd at nearly 300 protesters.

Organizers aren’t sure how big this Saturday’s protest might be given that another simultaneous protest will be held in Modesto, organized by Indivisible Stanislaus, part of the nationwide Indivisible network.

“I’m pretty conservative in making estimates, but we already have 90 people signed up through our announcement on Mobilize,” said Miller. “My guess would be around 250.”

Doo said the organizations have already held their sign-making events.

“We had the sign-making party last Saturday,” said Doo. “So, at this point, it’s make your own sign or borrow one of ours. We have enough signs if anybody wants to borrow one.”

Protesters are asked to avoid profanity or threats when making their signs, and not to attach them to wooden sticks or metal poles.

“One of the points of emphasis — though not exclusive because there’s so much to protest — is Yes on Proposition 50, which will help even the playing field and keep elections fair.”

Proposition 50 would replace California’s congressional maps, drawn by an independent commission, with new maps drawn by Democrats in an attempt to blunt Trump’s attempt in Texas to gain five Republican districts — a move intended to pad the GOP’s tenuous grip on the House of Representatives ahead of the 2026 midterms.
