CALIFORNIA EGG PRODUCTION: California's egg production during December totaled 302.2 million, up 17 million from November's production and up 13 million from December 2015. The all layers during the month totaled 12.2 million, up 3 percent from last month, but down 1 percent from December 2015. Eggs per 100 layers during the month were 2,487, compared to 2,426 a month earlier, and 2,346 in December 2015.

U.S. DECEMBER EGG PRODUCTION: United States egg production totaled 8.97 billion during December 2016, up 11 percent from last year. Production included 7.84 billion table eggs, and 1.13 billion hatching eggs, of which 1.04 billion were broiler-type and 87.0 million were egg-type. The total number of layers during December 2016 averaged 372 million, up 7 percent from last year. December egg production per 100 layers was 2,415 eggs, up 4 percent from December 2015.

All layers in the United States on January 1, 2017 totaled 372 million, up 6 percent from last year. The 372 million layers consisted of 314 million layers producing table or market type eggs, 53.9 million layers producing broiler-type hatching eggs, and 3.64 million layers producing egg-type hatching eggs. Rate of lay per day on January 1, 2017, averaged 77.9 eggs per 100 layers, up 4 percent from January 1, 2016.

U.S. EGG-TYPE CHICKS HATCHED: Egg-type chicks hatched during December 2016 totaled 46.2 million, down 1 percent from December 2015. Eggs in incubators totaled 40.2 million on January 1, 2017, down 16 percent from a year ago.

Domestic placements of egg-type pullet chicks for future hatchery supply flocks by leading breeders totaled 194 thousand during December 2016, down 10 percent from December 2015.

U.S. BROILER-TYPE CHICKS HATCHED: Broiler-type chicks hatched during December 2016 totaled 811 million, up 2 percent from December 2015. Eggs in incubators totaled 661 million on January 1, 2017, up 2 percent from a year ago.

Leading breeders placed 7.54 million broiler-type pullet chicks for future domestic hatchery supply flocks during December 2016, down slightly from December 2015.

U.S. TURKEY HATCHERY PRODUCTION: Turkey eggs in incubators on January 1, 2017, in the United States totaled 29.9 million, up 9 percent from January 1, 2016. Eggs in incubators were up 4 percent from the December 1, 2016 total of 28.8 million eggs.

Turkey poults hatched during December 2016, in the United States totaled 25.5 million, up 13 percent from December 2015. Poults hatched were up 10 percent from the November 2016 total of 23.1 million poults.

The 23.4 million net poults placed during December 2016 in the United States were up 4 percent from the number placed during the same month a year earlier. Net placements were up 8 percent from the November 2016 total of 21.6 million.
