Bakersfield native Luke Wonderly is embarking on a cross country journey spreading a message of peace that he hopes will end with a presidential visit.

Wonderly, 57, is on a Peace Walk that began in April and on Monday the 344 miles he has already logged brought him into Turlock, where he spent most of his time pulling his 80 pound wagon declaring his peace mission around town and waving at the passing motorists.

“I’ve had a wonderful reception in Turlock,” Wonderly said.

Wonderly’s message of peace comes through his commitment to the Venus Project. The Venus Project is an organization that was founded on the principle of a resource-based economy, in that goods, services and information are all free and distributed for the betterment of all humanity.

“Everyone wants a world that is peaceful, they just don’t know how to do it,” Wonderly said. “We use the scientific method to solve the problems of humans and the planet.”

Wonderly has at different times lived on a commune in Oregon and built a successful carpet and upholstery business in California.

He plans on traversing all 48 contiguous states before ultimately taking his message to Washington D.C. He hopes he may one day address the country’s political leaders, including the president.
