A former Turlock High School teacher will be honored this week by the San Joaquin Engineers Council with a Distinguished Service Award.

Bob Hoskins’ contributions in education, marked by an unwavering commitment to his students and community, is what impressed the engineers council.

The presentation of the award will be at the Council's 50th annual banquet at the University of the Pacific's DeRosa Center on Thursday. The Distinguished Service Award recognizes individuals who have dedicated their professional knowledge and skills to the advancement of the engineering profession in their community.

Hoskins holds an Associate of Science in Electronics Technology, a Bachelor of Arts in Industrial Technology, and a Master’s in Education and Counseling. Before embarking on his teaching career, he honorably served in the United States Marine Corps, a testament to his dedication to service.

During his tenure at Turlock High School, Hoskins taught Electronics and Technology, leaving an indelible mark on the school's technology program. Even in retirement, he continues to support the program with the same fervor and dedication.

His application for the Distinguished Service Award not only showcased his excellence but also highlighted the overwhelming support from his former students. Among these commendations were heartfelt testimonials from a current FBI agent, a TID NERC Certified Power Control Center Operator, an inventor with numerous worldwide patents, and numerous Turlock High School alumni who have pursued careers in engineering and technology.

In an era where many professionals gravitate towards high-paying private sector jobs, Hoskins chose a path of service. He led his classroom not from behind a chalkboard, but through example, encouragement, and hands-on experience. His act of community service has empowered thousands of students to lead in engineering, science, and other noble professions.

Hoskins's profound impact on his students' lives is beyond words, according to the engineering council. His exceptional teaching ability, dedication, initiative, creativity, and service shine through in the lives he has touched. He founded several industrial engineering programs at Turlock High School, solidifying his legacy as more than a teacher. He is a mentor, facilitator, encourager, and at times, a compass guiding students in the right direction—a second father to many. Affectionately known as 'Uncle Bob,' he often receives visits from former students, a testament to the lasting relationships he has built.

The award banquet is held during Engineer’s Week, a nationwide event recognizing the works and contributions of the engineering profession.
