Motorists should be prepared to detour around a number of roads around town as maintenance work is planned in the upcoming weeks.
Work crews will be installing a slurry seal roadway maintenance treatment at 134 locations throughout Turlock with construction commencing on Aug. 29. Preliminary work to prepare the roadway surface for this treatment, such as the removal of existing striping, is currently underway. The expected completion date for all construction activities is Sept. 30, barring any unforeseen complications.
This work will require each affected street section to be closed for a portion of the day. As the work approaches an area, each resident will be given a 48-hour notice on their door as to the specific day and times that the street will be closed. The City requests that residents not water their lawns or landscaping the day of, or 24 hours following, the slurry seal application on their section of street.
A slurry seal is a mixture of oil and crushed rock that is a cost-effective maintenance activity that is used to resurface and extend the life of existing streets. The process will begin with removal of existing pavement legends and striping, as well as sweeping of the street. Following this preliminary work the slurry seal treatment will be applied. The treatment takes about three to five hours to “set up” and be ready for vehicle traffic. The finished product will not be perfectly smooth due to the crushed rock component and the application process, but it will improve with traffic and time. There will be loose gravel for a period of time that may track onto residents’ driveways, though the City will make every effort to have the contractor minimize this from occurring whenever possible.
According to City policy, centerline striping will no longer be installed on local, residential streets. Centerlines will be installed on collectors, arterials and expressway streets. If a local, residential street included in this project currently has a centerline stripe, it will be eliminated as part of this project.
This is a capital project managed by the Development Services Department, Engineering Division. Funding for this project comes entirely through assessment district fees paid by property owners in the areas receiving the slurry seal treatments.
