School is out for many elementary school students around Turlock, and parents are looking for something fun and safe for their children to do for the summer. The City of Turlock Recreation Division is offering summer camps for kids in kindergarten through sixth grade.
The city will offer day camps on a weekly basis starting this week and going through August 14. Children in kindergarten through second grade can join the Little Gigglers Summer Camp, held at Turlock High School. This option is for parents who might want their younger children to be in a group with kids their own age, said Erik Schulze, supervisor of youth and Police Activities League for the Turlock Recreation Division.
Students in first through sixth grade can also attend summer camps held at Pitman High School. Schulze said that this option would be good for parents who have older children and younger children but want them to be in the same camp. Both camps offer full-day or half-day options.
For the first week the two camps were merged into one at the Turlock War Memorial park. Kids didn’t let the surprise rain showers ruin their fun on Tuesday afternoon. They stayed inside and played an interactive language game. Each child had a word taped to his or her back, and they had to rely on other campers to provide clues as to what that word was.
During camp kids will have the opportunity to play educational games, do arts and crafts, and participate in indoor and outdoor physical activities. Schulze said that kids at both camps will be able to swim during camp, Little Gigglers at Crane Park and Pitman Campers at the Pitman High pool.
Little Gigglers camp starts every morning at 7:30 a.m. Campers at Pitman can start as early as 6:30 in the morning. Both camps go until 6 p.m. to accommodate parents’ work schedules. A week of full-day camp costs $93, half-days go until 3 p.m. and cost $71. Parents who are interested in signing their children up for camp can call the Turlock Recreation Division at 668-5594.
