The Merced County Sheriff’s Department is concentrating their search for a missing 3-year-old boy in a canal behind the toddler’s grandmother’s house in Delhi.

The 3-year-old, Andres Tomas, was last seen Saturday afternoon at his grandmother’s house, located in the area of Letteau Avenue and Shanks Road. The yard abuts a canal and is loosely fenced with falling barbed wire, according to the sheriff’s department.

The boy’s grandmother was watching him and told the sheriff's department she lost sight of him for just a moment.

The sheriff's department has been deploying divers in the canal since Saturday night. The canal is operated by the Turlock Irrigation District and is about four and a half feet deep. The sheriff's department asked TID to slow the flow of the swift moving water on Sunday afternoon. The process takes about 12 hours to show results.
