Turlock is looking to charter a club that seeks to help women and girls globally with over 32,000 members in 20 different countries and territories, Soroptimist International.
The club is being organized by Soroptimist Sierra Pacific Region Director Bonnie Silveria, who said members of the new club will determine its areas of service based on community needs.
“The new club will offer opportunities to participate in programs that change lives, as well as develop lifelong friendships and a network of global connections,” she said.
The informational meeting will be held on Thursday, Jan. 28 at 6 p.m. at Beautiful Reflections Day Spa.
“Anyone interested should come to the meeting to learn more,” said Silveria. “Turlock is a large enough community to where there are needs having to do with the Soroptimist goals for women and girls that need to be met.”
Soroptimist members volunteer their talents and energy to help women and girls by giving them the resources to create positive change for themselves, their families and their communities. Their projects range from renovating domestic violence shelters, to providing mammograms to low-income women, to sponsoring self-esteem workshops for teenage girls.
Silveria added that Turlock used to have a Soroptimist International club some years back and it disbanded.
“I’ve had a couple of Turlock residents interested in re-chartering the club, and we are happy to do so,” she said.
The introductory meeting will be held at 225 E. Main St. and the group is looking for members of all ages.
“The name, Soroptimist, means ‘best for women’ and that’s what the new club will strive to achieve,” said Silveria. “That’s what we’re all about.”
