Stanislaus County records unemployment rate slightly above 9 percent

Merced County total employment grew 3.99%, the fastest among the San Joaquin Valley’s eight counties in 2021. Stanislaus County total employment grew the second fastest at 3.56%.

The unemployment rate for Stanislaus County in January went down slightly from the previous month and is just above California's rate, according to the latest data from the Employment Development Department.

Stanislaus County's unemployment rate in January was at 9.3 percent, down from 9.4 percent in December, but above the year-ago estimate of 6.8 percent, the EDD reported. California's unemployment rate was at 9.2 percent and the nation reported 6.8 percent for the same time period.

Three sectors in Stanislaus County reported job gains in January with Government recording the largest share with an estimated 900 positions. The growth in the Government sector was largely fueled by gains in the county school districts. The Professional and Business Services sector and Manufacturing both posted job gains of around 100 positions each, according to the EDD.

All other sectors in the county recorded job losses with the biggest declines coming from Trade, Transportation and Utilities (1,600), Farming (1,300) and Leisure and Hospitality (800).

Stanislaus County had an estimated labor force of 238,600 people with a reported 22,300 unemployed, according to the EDD.

For January, Turlock had an unemployment rate of 7.6 percent. Denair's came in at 8.8 percent. Hughson had a rate of 5.1 percent. Keyes reported a rate of 11.4 percent and Ceres had a rate of 10.4 percent.

The EDD released data regarding the online job vacancies and the companies looking to hire for the month of January. The top 10 positions with the most job ads for the month in Stanislaus County were: Registered nurses - 547; retail salespersons - 289; laborer and freight, stock and material movers - 256; sales representatives wholesale and manufacturing except scientific and technical products - 225; stock clerks and order fillers - 221; customer service representatives - 200; first-line supervisors of retail sales workers - 174; heavy and tractor-trailer drivers - 152; maintenance and repair workers - 136; and managers - 134.

The top 10 companies posting the most online job vacancies in Stanislaus county in January were: Anthem Blue Cross - 497; Amazon - 225; Tenet Health System - 160; Sutter Health - 135; Modesto City Schools - 108; Emanuel Medical Center - 103; Hospitals of Providence - 100; CVS Health - 77; E&J Gallo Winery - 76; and The Save Mart Companies - 69.
