The same recipe has adorned the back of the Libby’s Pumpkin canned puree labels since 1950. The company hasn’t changed the recipe for the past 68 years for a reason — it’s still the best. This is true in Turlock, as both the first and second place winners of the annual Dubyak Chiropractic Pumpkin Pie contest said the secret to their success was following the directions on the Libby’s can.

Each year, Dave Dubyak hosts a pumpkin pie contest to solicit desserts to donate to the United Samaritans Foundation for their Thanksgiving Day food truck stops.

This year’s win made Rina Tury a three-time champion in the pie contest. The Turlock woman said she and her husband enter the contest each year as a way to give to a good cause.

“The whole idea is to make the pies for their Thanksgiving dinner,” said Tury.

In the spirit of giving, Tury donated her $100 prize money to USF as well.

Second place winner, Geena Pritt, entered the contest along with two of her grandchildren. She also used the recipe on the Libby’s can. Pritt said that she only bakes for this contest, but this year she and her kitchen helpers had so much fun that they plan to do it again for Thursday’s family get-together.

Tury and Pritt have the distinction of being the final winners of the Dubyak Pumpkin Pie contest, as the local business owner decided the contest has run its course.

“It’s been awesome and we’ve had so much fun,” said Dubyak, who has sponsored this contest for the past 24 years. “We’ve been able to donate thousands of pies.”

He said this would be the final year for the contest due to lack of participation. In previous years, they’ve collected as many as 200 pies to give to United Samaritans. But after a second year of reaching only 20 pies, he said it was time to call it quits.
