Turlock firefighters rescue woman trapped in befouled hotel room

A woman who was unable to get off the floor of her hotel room for a day and a half was rescued by Turlock firefighters, who gained access to the trash-strewn room via a second story window.

The woman was not seriously injured but was unable to get herself up off the floor.

The medical call came in around 9 p.m. Thursday from the Candlewood Suites at 1000 Powers Court. The ambulance crew was unable to gain access to the room because the locking latch was secured across the door.

Turlock’s Engine 34 crew used a 24-foot extension ladder to get to the second story window and get into the room. The woman was found sitting on the floor against a wall near the bed.

The firefighters were able to let the ambulance personnel inside and they began an assessment of the woman.

The room was in very poor condition with trash, food containers and adult absorbent pads all piled up around the room and maggots in rotting food.

The woman said she had been living there for the last eight weeks, with no assistance. The conditions were documented and adult protective services were contacted.

Remembering a ‘fierce defender of freedom’
Memorial Day 1
During a Memorial Day ceremony held on Monday at Turlock Memorial Park, Marsha Gonsalves, with the support of her husband Larry, shares memories of their son, Sgt. 1st Class Chad Gonsalves, who died on Feb. 13, 2006, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee north of Deh Rawod in central Afghanistan (KRISTINA HACKER/The Journal).
Every Memorial Day, locals put on their red, white and blue attire, maybe don a red poppy in remembrance of the fallen, and make their way to Turlock Memorial Park cemetery.
