A fatal collision near Knights Ferry on Wednesday claimed the life a Turlock man and injured another.

The deceased was identified as Eddie Gonzales, 23, of Turlock.

Gonzales was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee westbound on State Road 108 near Knights Ferry shortly before 2 p.m. Wednesday when he crossed over the double yellow lines while entering a curve in the roadway. He collided with a Chevy SUV in the eastbound lane, driven by 54-year-old Edward Laverone of Los Altos.

Gonzales sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene of the collision.

According to California Highway Patrol Officer Aaron Keller, the collision trapped Laverone in his vehicle and he had to be extricated at the scene by crews from the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department.

Laverone was transported to Memorial Medical Center with major, but not life-threatening injuries, according to Keller.

The CHP is continuing to investigate the collision, but at this time it doesn’t appear that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the collision.
