Sergio Gutierrez, owner of Taqueria La Primera on S. First Street, has had a goal for the past few years of bringing more community events to the downtown area. A classic car aficionado, he started hosting monthly Cars and Coffee events in 2023, and now is coordinating Turlock’s inaugural Cinco de Mayo celebration alongside Paola Maldonado, of the Family Advocacy Resources Alliance.
“This is a brand new event for Turlock and, hopefully, we can do it every year,” said Guiterrez.
The event will feature local youth dance groups, two mariachi bands — one from Stanislaus State and one from Pitman High School — as well as representatives from the Mexican consul. And, of course, a classic car show. There will also be vendor booths and activities for kids.
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today on First Street in Turlock.
Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexico's victory over France at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Celebrations began in Columbia, Calif., where they have been observed annually since 1862. It has become a day to honor Mexican culture and heritage, especially in the United States.
