The Turlock Youth Cheer varsity and junior varsity teams put their best feet and pom poms forward earlier this month at the Jamz National Championship in Las Vegas and came away with gold and silver.
“It was fun and exciting to be able to compete in front of people and show people what I can do,” said Alyssa Hubbel, 11-year-old junior varsity cheerleader for the Turlock Youth Vikings teams and competition team.
This year both the junior varsity and varsity teams for the Turlock Youth Cheer were able to participate in the National Championship.
The JV team placed first in their category winning a trophy, gold medals and National Champions jackets. The varsity team placed second in their category.
Each competition team is made up of girls who cheered for either the 49ers or Vikings Turlock Youth Football teams during the regular season.
“The competition teams are an elite group of girls,” said Jillian Hubbel, parent of JV and varsity youth cheerleaders.
The JV and varsity teams prepared for Nationals by practicing about seven times a week, Jillian said.
“They put in lots and lots of hard work with lots of practice,” she said.
Turlock Youth cheerleaders perfected their performances to their own mixes of the Black Eyed Peas song “Boom Boom Pow” and Sean Kingston’s song “Fire Burning.” Their performances were a combination of dance, cheer, stunts and tumbling.
Varsity cheerleader, Sydney Hubbel’s favorite part of this year’s Nationals routine was their tumbling because of the new skills and tricks they learned. But her favorite part of the overall competition was finally beating their rivals.
“Our goal every year has been to surpass our rivals the Whittier Redskins,” Sydney said. “They are six-year defending National champions and we finally beat them this year.”
The Turlock Youth cheerleaders also compete in regional and state competitions during the regular football season.
The JV team placed first in competitions held in Santa Cruz, at the University of Pacific and at the University of California, Davis along with taking second at  a competition held in Six Flags and in Fresno.
The varsity team has taken first place at Six Flags and Fresno along with finishing second at Santa Cruz, the University of Pacific and UC Davis.
Both teams received awards for Best Stunt Sequence and Grand Champions for their overall best score. Turlock Youth Cheer received a Congeniality Award for best sportsmanship and their positive and encouraging attitude overall.
Girls on the JV competition team include Ashlee Camp, Kayla Cox, Robyn Evans, Mariah Garcia, Kira Garvey, Halley Goodwin, Dalina Holmes, Lorena Holmes, Alyssa Hubbel, Jessica Martin, Cassie Kroll, Danielle Miramontes, Mailenna Page, Cierra Rodriguez, Cheyenne Schraeder, Adryanna Silveira, Jessica Starkey, Kailey Underwood, Jessica Vercelli and Amy Veredas. The first place National winners are coached by Geli Hoerz and Alex Silveira.
