Several decades ago, the San Francisco Giants introduced a team mascot called the Crazy Crab — a nod to the bay’s beloved delicacy.
The Crazy Crab was not a hit with Giants fans, and was retired after just one season.
Maybe it was overexposure — a case of so much crab so readily available that the denizens of a port city just couldn’t get excited about a 6-foot crustacean.
Well, the Crazy Crab probably would’ve been a folk hero in Turlock, a city that gears up all year for crab-feed season.
The 2026 crab-feed season officially kicked off last month with the 14th annual Turlock Firefighters Crab Feed. And sales have already ended for Saturday’s second annual Friends of the Fair Crab Feed.
But fear not crab-lovers, there are plenty of others you can still get in on:
- On Saturday, the Turlock Pentecost Association will hold its annual crab and cioppino dinner at the Turlock Pentecost Association Hall, 528 N. Golden State Blvd. Dinner includes crab cioppino, shrimp, clams, garlic bread, and an open bar crab. Tickets are $80 and will not sold at the door. No take-outs are available.
