Unemployment rate increases; still below last years estimate

The unemployment rate in Stanislaus County rose in November, but continued to be well-below the estimates set for this time a year ago, according to the latest numbers from the Employment Development Department.

The unadjusted unemployment rate for Stanislaus County in November came in at 14.5 percent. The rate is up from a revised October rate of 13.9 percent and below the year-ago estimate of 15.6 percent. Last year the unemployment rate in Stanislaus County for November was at 15.4 percent.

The only industry in the county to post job growth in November was the Trades, Transportation and Utilities sector. The sector added an estimated 400 positions, all of which were in retail, according to the EDD.

Construction showed a moderate loss as weather forced some projects to come to a halt. Manufacturing also saw a decline of an estimated 400 jobs for the month.

While several sectors saw losses for the month, almost every sector is recording overall job growth for the year, with manufacturing leading in Stanislaus County. The manufacturing industries have added an approximate 1,400 jobs from the same time period last year.

The unemployment rate in Merced County rose to 15.7 percent from a revised October rate of 14.6 percent. San Joaquin County posted an unemployment rate of 14.1 percent for November, up from 13.6 percent in October.

California’s unemployment rate decreased to 9.8 percent in November, down from 10.1 percent in October. The U.S. unemployment rate decreased in November to 7.7 percent.

The number of people unemployed in California was 1,805,000 – down by 43,000 over the month, and down by 285,000 compared with November of last year.

In Turlock the unemployment rate increased to 11 percent from 10.6 percent the month before. Denair’s rate grew from 7.6 percent in October to 7.9 percent in November. Hughson’s rate went from 18.2 percent in October to 18.8 percent in November. Keyes had an unemployment rate of 25.2 percent, up from 24.4 percent.

According to EDD data, the Stanislaus County employers posting the most help wanted ads for November were: E. & J. Gallo Winery – 195; Sutter Health – 90; Supplemental Health Care – 64; Kaiser Permanente – 56; Toys “R” Us/ Babies “R” Us – 40; Doctors Medical Center of Modesto - 34; Alliance Worknet – 29; Soliant Health – 27; Newman-Crows Landing Unified – 25; and Turlock Unified School District – 25.
