Community members took a hike for cancer at the annual Turlock Relay for Life, held Saturday at Dutcher Middle School. Thousands of people and dozens of organizations participated in the event, which smashed a projected fundraising goal of $200,000 and raised $265,000 for the American Cancer Society and cancer research.

According to event fundraiser Kristin Bettencourt, relay team known as Bosom Buddies, led by Barbara Metheron raised $24,000 alone, and Shirley Coelho was the individual leader with $7,000 raised.

A recurring theme at the opening night of the 2025 Stanislaus County Fair in Turlock — the 107th edition of the annual event — was the heat. Sure, it's not 108 degrees like last year, but 102 on Friday afternoon wasn't too far off.
