In celebration of California State University, Stanislaus’ 50th anniversary, the university’s music department is joining with the Turlock Concert Association for a Golden Gala Concert that will feature the premiere performance of two new musical compositions.
The gala concert is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Turlock Community Theatre. The show will feature traditional and contemporary performances by CSU Stanislaus faculty and students, including choral, wind and jazz ensembles.
The highlight of the evening will be the premiere performances of two compositions by College of the Arts Music Professor Deborah Kavasch and Associate Professor Daniel Afonso. The new works were commissioned by the Turlock Concert Association through a donation.
“Of course I said yes when they approached me,” said Kavasch. “There is nothing like a premiere performance. The thrill never dies.”
Kavasch said she immediately started tossing around ideas for her composition and has created a work that she believes expresses a “celebration of the students.”
“It’s titled ‘Burning Bright!’ which has so many connotations and represents different aspects of the college and creative experience,” Kavasch said.
Tickets will be available at the door and are $10 for general admission and $8 for students, seniors, faculty and staff. All proceeds from ticket sales at the door will benefit the Department of Music Scholarship Fund.
The theatre is located at 1574 E. Canal Drive.
