Backstage Academy of Dance is putting a spin on the classic Christmas tale of Clara and her nutcracker with their performance of “Twisted Nutcracker.”

“Twisted Nutcracker” still tells the story of Clara’s Christmas Eve journey through the Land of Sweets, but the Academy has expanded the style in which the story is told.

“We decided to change it up and add all styles of dance instead of only ballet and on pointe,” said Backstage Academy owner and director Kristi Garcia.

The show features a cast of 70 dancers, ranging in age from 5 years to over 35 years, performing jazz, hip hop, ballet, tap and other dance styles.

“The variety of dance styles is exciting,” Garcia said. “I think people will like how upbeat it is and that it has something for everyone. I’m blessed with all these dancers who can transition from one style to another. They’re amazing.”

The Turlock dance troupe will be performing “Twisted Nutcracker” at 6:30 p.m. tonight and Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday. All shows are at the Turlock Community Theatre at 1574 E. Canal Drive. Tickets at the door are $20 for adults and $15 for children 4 to 12 years old and for students with valid school id.
