Adeline passed away peacefully at Tuolumne General Medical Facility in Sonora on Dec. 10 at the age of 102.
She was born in Oakland on Aug. 20, 1908, to Alfred and Josephine Simi. In 1922, she moved to Concord, where she graduated from Mt. Diablo High School and Healds Business College. She worked for Shell Oil Company in Martinez as a bookkeeper for 10 years. It is there she met her husband, Joseph Light. After their marriage in 1933, they built a house in Martinez. Adeline continued working in Martinez as a bookkeeper for Bank of America, Contra Costa County offices, and various automobile agencies.
Adeline was an active member of the Luso American Association, and the Senior Citizen Club where she enjoyed dancing with the Line Dance Group well into her 80s. In retirement she and her husband enjoyed traveling with their trailer club and friends. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in Hawaii, and also made a trip to the Azores Islands.
In 1986, Adeline’s husband of 53 years died. She continued living in the home they built until the year 2000 when she moved to the Chateau in Pleasant Hill. In 2003, she moved to Monte Vista Manor and Lifespring Senior Campus in Turlock. This past year she moved to Sonora to be closer to her family.
In 2008, she celebrated her 100th birthday in Twain Harte surrounded by her family. She spent the last years of her life enjoying playing cards, Scrabble, and crossword puzzles. She loved gardening and helped tend the tomato garden at Monte Vista Manor.
Adeline was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph; and sister, Clementine Chisom. She is survived by her sister, Geraldine Thayer of Sonora; brother, Stanford Simi of Rio Vista; and several nieces and nephews and friends.
Memorial services have been held. Adeline requested that any contributions to her memory be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
