A private service and inurnment will be held for Agatha Ashcraft, 92, of Turlock.
Agatha was born May 31, 1917, in Neunkirchen, Soap land, Germany and died June 15 in Turlock Nursing & Rehab.
She was born in the Saarland and was raised in the Rhineland by her grandparents, after she lost her father during World War I and her mother at age 6. She attended a girl’s finishing school in Dusseldorf at 16 for four years; then worked as house-hostess in Upper Crust Homes. She survived Allied bombing in Mannheim and resettled to Heidelberg, where Heinz, her only child, was born in 1943. There she was employed as waitress in several top restaurants until after the war. In 1947, she went to work for the occupying Americans at an Officer’s Club, supervising all-German employees in food and beverage. She courted M/Sgt Ashcraft from 1953 and they married in 1955. They came to the States side in July 1956, when he was transferred to Ft. Ord (Monterey), settling in Pacific Grove. They divorced in 1967; then she moved to Los Angeles. There she married an engineer (with Howard Hughes Tool Co) in 1970. After that marriage failed, she moved to San Francisco, where she managed a 40-unit apartment house for the V. HallinanFam. (former District Attorney). After leaving that demanding job, she resided with gentleman friend Eddy Carvalho for five years. At age 65 she moved to Turlock, because of dear friend Amanda Ratzka. Agatha resided on Bothum Road (17 years) and Alpha Road (10 years), both at a Senior Housing. She was a very independent, vivacious, outgoing and savvy lady, who easily made friends. She was an avid reader, self-determined and opinionated, but also sympathetic to those in need. Agatha loved talking about her “interesting” experiences.
Survivors include son, Heinz W. Burger of San Francisco; cousins, Lothar Burger and Hedwig Kappler; and other relatives in Germany.
Memorial contributions may be made to: Turlock Nursing & Rehab Center Employee Fund, 1111 E. Tuolumne Rd., Turlock, CA 95382.
Services under the direction of Whitehurst, Norton & Dias Funeral Service of Turlock.
