Alphonso “Al” Serena, 76, passed away while surrounded by his family on August 18, 2016. Although he was born in Brawley, he was a resident of Turlock since 1945 and was a 1958 graduate of Turlock High School. His grandkids knew him as Poppi, but his close family and friends knew him as Big Al or Uncle Al the Kiddies Pal. He loved cracking jokes and making people laugh all the time. His greatest joy was his family, and would do anything for anyone at any time. Some of his favorite pastimes included fishing, traveling, and watching sports. He made sure that he was at every sporting event and school function that his grandkids participated in. He is survived by his three daughters who were the light of his life, and he had a special bond with each of them: Sandy (Ellis) Hilton, Sally (Seldon) Dickinson, and Susan (Ken) Taylor. Al is survived by 3 sisters Jennie Annaya, Carmen Hutcheson, Angelina Draffen. He had eight grandchildren: Vincent (Rachelle) Dickinson, Amanda (Brandon) Gallegos, Dominic Dickinson, Tyler (Robyn) Hilton, Mitchell Hilton, Lauren Taylor, Madison Taylor, and Austin Taylor, as well as four great-grandchildren: Emily, Jaxson, Benjamin, and Barrett. He is preceded in death by his parents, Florentino and Mercedes, and his siblings David, Rosie, and Bonnie. While our hearts ache knowing that he is no longer with us, we will cherish all of our memories and carry them with us for the rest of our lives. A memorial service will be held at Allen Mortuary on Saturday, August 27 at 1pm.
