ZARCONECarl2010
Carl Zarcone, 99, of Gustine and long-time resident of Patterson, passed away peacefully Monday at Alexander Cohen Hospice House in Hughson with his wife, Jeanne, by his side. He was nine months short of his 100th birthday.
Carl came into the world on Sept. 20, 1910 in Buffalo, NY, the eldest of six children born to Jack and Virginia Zarcone. Two years after his birth the family relocated to Fresno. As a youngster, Carl worked in his father’s meat market/grocery store. In 1928, they moved to San Francisco. At the beginning of the Depression, in 1930, Carl went to work for the Bank of America, then known as the Bank of Italy. In 1934, he transferred to the bank’s Fresno main office. Many of the people he met there became life-long friends, forming “The Tahoe Group” that vacationed together almost yearly over the decades.
In 1939, Carl married Barbara Schwab of Dinuba, Calif. Their marriage produced three children: Ron, Rick and Carlene. The family moved to Patterson in 1955. After 51 happy years of marriage, Barbara passed away in 1990. The next year Carl and Jeanne Bloom were wed. They enjoyed 19 wonderful years together, particularly relishing travel and time with loved ones. Jeanne’s children, Roger, Khaled, Melissa and Peter truly became his family.
In addition to nine years in the wholesale meat business, Carl spent 36 years in banking. Over the years he served as branch manager in both Patterson and Newman. In 1975, over 100 well-wishers honored him at a party marking his retirement from Lloyd’s Bank. Although he enjoyed golfing with friends several times a week, he soon grew a bit bored with not working and took a job with Thompson Chevrolet, helping in the service department and with dealer trades. In September 2000, on his 90th birthday, he decided the time was finally right and retired from that position. He and Jeanne have spent the years since living in Santa Cruz and Gustine.
Throughout his life Carl was blessed with robust health. People were often shocked in recent years to learn his age, assuming him to be 10 to 15 years younger than he was. His “secret” may well have been his gentlemanly demeanor and his belief in moderation in all things.
Carl was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge 488 of Patterson, the Patterson Rotary, Newman Rotary, Patterson Apricot Fiesta Committee, Patterson Chamber of Commerce, a Patterson volunteer fireman for 26 years, and a former member of the Turlock Country Club.
Mr. Carl Zarcone is survived by his wife, Jeanne Zarcone of Gustine; sons, Ron Zarcone of Reno, Nev., Rick Zarcone of Sedona, Ariz.; daughter, Carlene Zarcone of Turlock; Jeanne’s children, Roger, Khaled, Melissa and Peter; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Zarcone, in 1990; sisters, Frances, Alvera, Rose and Gloria; and his brother, Frank.
