Carmendale Fernandes, 90, of Stockton passed away on October 15, 2014. She was born August 25, 1924, in Turlock to parents, J.C. and Clara Fernandes. Carmendale was raised in Turlock, attended local schools and graduated from Turlock High School. She then attended San Jose State College and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in education and later completed her Master’s degree. Carmendale taught school in Sunnyvale from 1946-1988. She was the coach of the debate and speech teams during her tenure at Sunnyvale High School and was nationally known for her work in the field of speech and debate.  She was a past President of the National Forensics League and was inducted into the Hall of Fame for both the National Forensics League and the California High School Speech Association.  She is survived by her sister, Adelia Bettencourt–Banzhof and predeceased by her brother Robert J. Fernandes.  A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, November 8, 2014, at 1:00 PM at Turlock Funeral Home, 425 N. Soderquist Rd, Turlock.  In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the National Speech and Debate Association’s Carmendal Fernandes Memorial Fund.  Donations can be made electronically at speechanddebate.org/carmendale or by mail at 125 Watson Street, Ripon, WI. , 54971.
