A memorial service will be held for Charlie Countz at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 22 at Gospel Defenders Church, 2909 N. Beechwood, Merced. There will be an outdoor potluck following the memorial service at the same location. Countz died Aug. 13 from stroke, kidney and liver failure.
Countz grew up in the Turlock area and graduated from Turlock High School in 1955. He started Countz Countertops in the late 1960s and sold it in 2005. He was known for his love of hunting and his 20 plus years of sobriety. He was an avid promoter of Alcoholics Anonymous.
He is survived by son, Stan Countz; brother, Steven Countz; and grandchildren, Jessica and Vanessa Countz of Modesto, Alan Countz of Oregon and Ken and Chad Countz of Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 27 years, Myrna (who died in 2005); sons, Thomas and Kenneth, who died in 1999 and 2009 respectively; and mother, Jean Countz of Mariposa who passed away in May of 2008. Countz was also married to Novelly Deluca, formerly of Turlock.
