Donald was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada to Jane and William Lumgair. He was known in Calgary for his athletic abilities on the football field of Western Canada High School. He moved to Oregon to further pursue his education and to play football for Oregon College of Education at Monmouth, Ore. After graduating from college, he attended California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. Donald taught at Los Banos High School for 30 years, from 1962 to 1992. He coached football, swimming, and golf. He also coached the Los Banos Tiger Sharks swim team in summer recreation, and he served on the Los Banos Recreation Commission Board. He was the past president of the Los Banos Teachers Association and was one of the founders of the Merced-Mariposa chapter to California Teachers Association in Merced. Donald was also a past president of the Turlock Golf and Country Club, and he volunteered for the AT&T and U.S. Open Golf tournaments. He served as a committeeman for the Northern California Golf Association after retiring from teaching.
Donald is survived by his wife of 39 years, Darlene; two sons, Gavin of Palm Desert and Ian (Jill) of Fayetteville, NC; grandchildren, Lyssa, Conner, Carolina and Amelia; two step-daughters, Kalinda and Kathy Kelly of Turlock; and sister, Dorothy (Pete) Kennedy of Calgary.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 31 at Western View Mobile Home Ranch Clubhouse, 1400 N. Tully Rd., in Turlock.
