Elizabeth “Betty” Jane Mulnix, 83, was born Dec. 23, 1926 and passed away Sept. 15, 2010 — one day short of her 65th wedding anniversary.
A teacher for over 40 years, she was an educator all of her life. She received her teaching credential in 1962 from California State University, Hayward and her master’s degree from California State University, Stanislaus.
Locally, she taught in Oakdale, Empire, Sylvan, and Modesto school districts. Her specialty was learning disabilities. Her credentials included Learning Handicap Credential, Certified Resource Specialist, and
Miller Unruh Reading Specialist. After her retirement in 2003 from Modesto City Schools, she started her own tutoring business CTTB (Consulting Testing and Tutoring by Betty).
A member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society since 1981, she received the Delta Kappa International Women’s History Award. Other honorariums include: Presenter at the International Reading Conference in New Zealand (1977), Golden Apple Award from Empire School District (1993), Jean and Clyde Dunlap Literacy Award (2008), and the Cambridge University VIP Who’s Who (2009, 2010). She was also the author of “READ-ON-IX, Teaching Reading Through Brain Development.”
Her hobbies were travel, dancing, teaching and brain development. She and her husband, Hal, danced their way around the world. The ripple effects of her life will remain unquantifiable.
She was preceded in death by sons, Stephen, Gary and Philip and is survived by her husband, Harold (Hal); son, Douglas; four grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
Viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 20 at Allen Mortuary, 247 N. Broadway, Turlock. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at the First United Methodist Church, 850 16th St., Modesto, with a light buffet to be served afterwards. Interment will be at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 21 in Santa Nella at the National Cemetery.
