Hazel Mae (Siler) Kirk, 82, passed away at Sonora Regional Medical Center in Sonora on Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010. Hazel was born on March 29, 1927 in Santa Fe, NM to Eddie and Glesyner Siler. Hazel spent her early years in Santa Fe, until she left for Rockmont College in Denver, Colo. While attending college, Hazel met her future husband Bud Kirk.
Bud and Hazel were married on Sept. 20 1947. In Denver, Hazel and Bud had the first of their six children, a son, Larry Eugene Kirk, followed by the arrival of Charles (Ed) Kirk in Santa Fe, NM. Steven Douglas Kirk was born in Denver, Colo. A few years later, twins David and Daniel Kirk were born in Leadville, Colo. while Bud worked as a pastor at First Baptist Church in Leadville. Many years later, their only daughter, Kathleen Diane Kirk, joined the family in Santa Barbara.
After settling in Oakland, Hazel operated a day care in the family home to be with her children as they were growing up. After moving from Alameda to Turlock, Hazel went to work as a nurse’s assistant at Emanuel Hospital. She and Bud later moved to New Jersey to join their son, Ed, and his family. After retiring from Borden Foods in New Jersey, Bud and Hazel moved back to Turlock to join their other children.
In 1992, Bud and Hazel moved to Alturas Baptist Church where Bud was pastor for 12 years. After retiring a second time, Bud and Hazel moved to Tuolumne to live with their family.
Hazel is survived by her husband of 62 years, Bud Kirk; children and their spouses, Larry and Margaret Kirk of Turlock, Ed and Cheryl Kirk of Pequannock, NJ, Steven Kirk and Teresa Harris of Berkeley, David and Sharon Kirk of Modesto, Daniel and Julie Kirk of Ceres, and Kathy and Randy Bullock of Tuolumne. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; sisters, Betty Lloyd of Grants Pass, Ore., Mary Edith Council of Tehachapi and Peggy Klap of Tucson, Ariz.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, Eddie and Glesyner Siler and Roland and Elizabeth Siler; two brothers; and four sisters.
Hazel was known by her family and friends for her caring spirit and wonderful smile she showed to all. A viewing will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 22 at Terzich & Wilson Funeral Home in Sonora. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23 at Sonora Baptist Church, with a potluck lunch following the service.
